Summary:This dissertation explores the emergence of a literary character that I propose to call Figur der Un-Zugehorigkeit (Figure of Non-Belonging). This figure is developed by Modernist literature throughout the 19th century. It not only depicts and makes visible Un-Zugehorigkeit, but it also represents a literary program. This literary figure regularly causes problems for the narrator. The figure creates empty spaces around which the narration circulates. And which, as a result, leads to an investigative narrative approach. What is at stake here is the availability of information - or rather the lack of it. That is, the information about characters who inhabit the margins of society or who perform some sort of escape movement - and who, precisely in doing so, are marked as un-zugehorig (non-belonging). Thus, Un-Zugehorigkeit (Non-Belonging) becomes the source of literary production. The four chapters are dedicated to theorists like Gilles Deleuze, Giorgio Agamben, and Roland Barthes, on the one hand, and literary authors such as Herman Melville, Adalbert Stifter, E.A Poe, Franz Grillparzer, and Wilhelm Raabe, on the other. In the course of this, the narrator's task, created by the Figur der Un-Zugehorigkeit, is discussed in the context of two eminently modern phenomena: the metropolis (Grossstadt) and mass society (Massengesellschaft). The texts, despite their individuality, feature similarities which lay the ground for the comparative analysis undertaken in this dissertation. Metropolis and mass society are analyzed as the main motivators for a significant aesthetic shift in the literary perception of characters and related aspects such as individuality, social interaction, community, realist(ic) writing, and plot development. Narrative problems and social phenomena are intertwined in this. Historical forms and their social perceptions are taken up by the authors mentioned above, and engaged aesthetically. Grossstadt and Massengesellschaft therefore directly influence literary production. Meanwhile, the question of what it means to live (together) under these new social parameters leads not only to literature becoming the precursor of sociology but also to completely new modes of literary production.
