Robert Leroy Platzman, physicist, chemist, teacher. The Robert Leroy Platzman Papers consist of a greeting card from James Franck, three cards from Arthur H. Compton on behalf of the Metallurgical Laboratory, and a carbon copy of a letter to Eugene Rabinowitch regarding the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.

Biographical Note

Robert Leroy Platzman was born on August 23, 1918 to Alfred and Rose (Kaufman) Platzman. He attended the University of Chicago, receiving his B.S. (1937), S.M. in Physics (1940), and Ph.D. in Chemistry (1942). In the 1940s Platzman worked in the Metallurgical Laboratory at the University of Chicago.

Platzman was Associate professor of Physics at Purdue University (1949-1958), senior physicist at Argonne National Laboratory (1958-1965). He became Professor of Chemistry and Physics at the University of Chicago in 1966.

Platzman married Eva Maria Platzman in 1947. The couple had three children: Loren Kerry, Elena Maria, and Kenneth Rainer.

Robert Leroy Platzman died on July 2, 1973 in Chicago, Illinois.
